The 2024-2025 school year has been a big success for Madison’s Mission. We have officially started working with two elementary schools as well as a bigger group of volunteers! Rayne Fang, Andrew Liu, Matthew Xie, Marian Locati, and Lance Yang were big contributors to our success.
To start off the year, the kids made slime! To match the Halloween theme, the students had a chance to have fun and make their personalized slime. With a plethora of glitter and colors to choose from, it’s safe to say that everyone had a blast! Of course, it’s not a Halloween celebration without some candy, so the kids received some sweet treats to take home at the end.
The next month, our activity was Thanksgiving-themed. The students got to draw their favorite food to add to the Thanksgiving table and learned how to spell different foods to put in the cornucopia! To channel their creative energy, they got to make their own hand turkeys! They also learned why the leaves turn different colors and how the seasons change due to the Earth’s tilt!
When winter started rolling around, we did our annual cookie baking activity! It is one of the highlights of the year, as the kids and teachers all enjoy baking cookies with each other. With the endless choices of shapes and the yummy sprinkles on top, the kids made countless cookies to eat before winter break. While in the holiday spirit, we gave everyone a little gift bag with toys and trinkets. Sharing the joy of the new year and the holidays with these students was extremely meaningful and memorable, and we can’t wait to continue this tradition!
As the new year rolled around, snow began to fall! To match the cold weather, the kids made sock snowmen and snowflakes in January. Every snowman and snowflake was custom-made to match the students’ personalities and interests, and the kids had a fun time DIYing their own creations.
Soon enough it was nearing the end of the school year, and our final activity was making kites and paper pinwheels. Along with a mini-lesson on how kites fly and pinwheels spin, the students got to design and make their own pinwheels and kites! Afterwards, they enjoyed the beautiful weather and played outside with their new toys. It was a wonderful ending to another year working with these amazing kids.
Madison’s Mission would not be possible without the volunteers and the classrooms that are so generous with their time. We hope to come back with even better curriculums and share the joy of these students one activity at a time. Here’s to a great new year!
