On March 23, 2024, the Madison’s Mission team went to Jarrettown Elementary School to host an educational activity for the multiple disabilities class. A nice stretch of warm weather has recently given everyone a brief preview of spring. With spring comes plenty of rain, so this month’s activity centered around the water cycle. The kids learned about the path water takes as it evaporates up and then precipitates down again. They also practiced their lettering skills by writing the names of the steps of the water cycle on a diagram.
Then, in the spirit of soon-arriving Easter, the kids got to apply their new knowledge to get some sweet treats. Easter eggs had been hidden around the room when the team first arrived, and the kids enthusiastically sifted through the room in search of them. Inside each egg was a slip of paper with a question related to the water cycle. Once each student answered 3 questions, they were awarded with a delicious, sugar coated marshmallow peep!
The team stayed for another 30 minutes and encouraged the kids as they imagined and put together creative “meals” using the pretend-food set in the room. We “taste tested” and gave seals of approval to creations from the tasty sounding double-egg-shrimp soup to the unorthodox cookie-burrito. Once again, we would like to thank all the staff and volunteers for their assistance in making this event possible, and we look forward to coming again next month and continuing to help out!
