On April 26, 2024, Madison’s Mission team visited Jarrettown Elementary School to host an educational activity on flowers and plants for the multiple disabilities class, celebrating the beautiful spring weather.
First, we reviewed the different parts of the flower, including the stem, petals, and leaves. The kids followed our teaching with a printed-out worksheet of a flower, which had blank spots left to fill in as we taught and discussed the parts of a flower. Then, the team showed a solar-powered flower that swayed back and forth when placed in the sun. This taught the kids about how an energy source can be powered through solar energy. And it was a hit since the kids loved watching it! Then, we tested the kids to explore their creativity by drawing the best flower they could dream up.
Then after about 30 minutes, the team ventured to the outdoors of the Jarrettown School yard, along with coloring supplies and smiles. At a picnic table, everyone gathered together, and we began to draw the dandelions, clovers, and other flowers we had picked from the yard around us. The kids loved to blow away the dandelions, and their passion for blowing away every seed spread a contagious joy in all of us.
Then, with the extra time remaining, we bonded one-on-one with the kids and played with their favorite puzzles and games. The time went by quickly, and another event had come to a close.
This was yet another wonderful day at Jarrettown! It was great to enjoy the gorgeous spring weather with the kids, and we hope to continue to make an impact on the community. We would also like to give thanks to all the staff and volunteers for making this activity possible!
